A Week Looking Inward

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2014

It’s amazing how a week looking inward can change your outlook on life. The week before Memorial Day, I had the opportunity to do just that, at Adyashanti‘s silent retreat located in Tahoe.

The retreat involved daily meditation, morning and afternoon talks and a lot of time to myself. I’m new to meditation, so thought it required me to focus my energy somewhere. According to Adyashanti, the purpose of meditation is to let your mind be completely still. Since my mind goes 100 mph, this took practice. The first few days my mind would wander or I’d fall asleep, but towards the end I could feel the stillness.

In order for one to be completely still, you must have complete silence. The entire retreat was held in silence. That’s right, a week with no talking, reading, music, Internet or even eye contact. The purpose of the retreat is to look inward.

I know what you’re thinking. “Ummm… Bess, how did you stay silent for an entire week?”

Surprisingly, I didn’t find it too difficult. I enjoyed the silence. I wrote, hiked and slept. I liked the stillness. It felt nice to drop off the digital grid and look at myself, my thoughts, feelings and emotions.

Overall, I have a newfound appreciation for living in the moment. I’m accepting things beyond my control. I know there’s a spirit inside all of us that cannot be explained. We came from nothing, we turn into nothing, but our energy will always live on.

If you’re interested in learning more about the retreat, send me an email. It was well worth the week of solitude.

Making Changes

Sunday, December 8th, 2013

Shortly before Thanksgiving I dropped off the grid for over a week. While I told friends it was a personal growth retreat, it turned out to be so much more.

Due to a tumultuous childhood, I’d developed a lot of negative patterns. Despite what social media may portray, I can be unhappy, self-doubting, hurried, jealous, critical, stressed out, a perfectionist, impatient, compulsive, a know-it-all and self-admittedly a tad narcissistic. While I have all these patterns, I also have something else: the power to change.

I spent a week away from technology, with 39 amazing individuals and five caring counselors. We identified issues and learned tools to tackle this non-beneficial behavior.

Nestled in the outskirts of Napa, this opportunity didn’t change my life. It gave me the power to change my life. We have the power to control our emotions. We have the power to manifest our destiny.

A special thank you to Tom, the person who believed in me enough to make this happen. I am eternally grateful for your kindness.

Also, a big thank you to my 39 new friends. Thank you for the continued support. I appreciate all your calls, texts and emails. Looking forward to my call with Raz-Ma-Taz tomorrow morning.

I’m two weeks post-Process, and slowly making my visualizations a reality. It’s not easy, but it’s not impossible. The universe has a plan, and I’m going with it.

Crazy childhood, unhappy marriage or looking to improve your overall wellbeing, send me a message. I’ll give you deets on this unforgettable experience via email.

Not-So-Baby Cousin

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

My baby cousin Katie is no longer a baby, but a mega-babe. When she asked me to shoot senior photos, I jumped at the chance.

Thick, long hair, legs for days, stunning smile and a personality to boot, I’m one lucky cousin. I look forward to seeing her transformation from a high school student, to Washington State Coug, to a successful young woman.

If you need senior portraits, head shots or just want to take some pictures, feel free to contact me. I’ll travel depending on the assignment.
