Palm Springs to Seeking Salvation

Salvation Moutain

On my bucket list of sites to see is Salvation Mountain, so for Valentine’s weekend in Palm Springs Val and I made the drive to seek salvation.

This inland gem adds a punch of positivity to the otherwise decrepit desert. The creator, Leonard Night, built Salvation Mountain out of adobe clay, stray and paint, as a testament to his faith. While Leonard recently passed away, his legacy lives on.

Salvation Mountain sits at the entrance to Slab City, off the grid 190 miles south east of Los Angeles. Val and I ventured into Slab City, and witnessed a mashup pf Burning Man meets Breaking Bad. Dubbed “the last free place in America,” Slab City takes its name after concrete slabs left behind from the abandoned World War II Marine barracks of Camp Dunlap. Today it’s a hot spot for snowbirds, squatters and those looking to get off the grid. Slab City, definitely a site to be seen.

If you’re exploring the Indio Vally, make sure to swing through Salvation Mountain. Slab City too, but I wouldn’t go there alone. Happy hunting and good vibes in your search for Salvation!

Feeling Garden Glam on #SelfieSunday

Sunday, September 13th, 2015

Feeling glam my last week in the garden thanks to lash extensions by the amazing Val Harvey!

Val is one of my best friends and a talented makeup artist. She’s expanded her beauty knowledge and branched into lash extensions.

These lashes are over a week worn, and they still look flawless. No makeup needed. I seriously wake up and go.

For all my Angelenos looking for effortless beauty, contact Val for lash extensions. Make sure to follow her Insta as she’ll be renting a chair soon!

Mohawk Makeup’s Makeovers

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

A few months back I helped Val with before and after makeup photos for her portfolio. Val transformed four already lovely ladies into smoking hot sirens (these are her edits).

I shot a little video as well, and sat on it until recently. I’m by no means a video pro, but dabble in Final Cut from time to time (it’s good to know for the nonprofit too).

Just wanted to share the talents of my amazing best friend. Enjoy the video below!

Valerie Harvey is my best friend. She’s supportive, thoughtful and loyal. She has a wicked sense of humor. She makes a great road trip companion. She can roll with the punches, and talk perfumes to talk politics. Val is also something more. She is one Hell of a makeup artist.

I met Val in January 2012 outside Hotel Erwin in Venice Beach. She and a client clicked their heels on the way to a beachside photo shoot. I jokingly clicked my heels too. Val commented on my outfit. I recruited her for a focus group. We realized we were neighbors and after grabbing drinks that night, the rest is history.

Val got her start as a resident makeup artist at Bloomingdales. She quickly worked her way up to business manager before transferring to NARS at Neiman Marcus. At NARS, Val excelled breaking team sales goals and building a large clientele. About three years ago, Val decided to leave the counter for a freelance career. A gusty move, but this gal has guts. She’s worked with clients like Disney, Roxy/Quicksilver, Rodarte, Marchesa, Philip Lim and Jason Wu. Celebrities behind her brush include Betty White, Carnie Wilson, Alana Stewart and Shirley Jones. She’s even touched up men like Trevor Donovan, William Baldwin and Kevin Neiland.

Today Val owns her own business, Mohawk Makeup. She specializes in celebrity, editorial, TV and bridal makeup. Val also does makeup consultations, for ladies like me who have no clue what they’re doing (when we met, she did an overhaul on my makeup bag).

I must give a huge thank you to Val. She’s done my makeup for countless events. From Coachella, Lil Death and Swimming With Sharks, to photo shoots and girls nights outs, not a day goes by I take Val or her skills for granted. She is hands down the best makeup artist I’ve ever met.

So to all my LA creatives, from the models and stylists, to photographers and videographers, if you are looking for a makeup artist for your next gig, give Val a call. She will go above and beyond to ensure your project looks its best.
