Today marks the first 4/20 I’ve felt confident about my cannabis career. I’ve always been an advocate for the industry, but it wasn’t until recently I realized my true potential. For those of you just joining my #cannabess adventures, let me recap how things came to be.

During summer ’06 I lived a UW frat where I met Bri and Liz. As “non-sorority girls” we broke the rules. We stuffed towels in the door jams to smoke weed in the house. Rules are meant to be broken, right? If you told me ten years later we’d grow legal weed together, I wouldn’t believe you.

Fast forward to 2011. I’ve returned from China, the economy is shit and I’m in Seattle for holidays. Bri now grows medical marijuana and I am lucky enough to photograph her garden. My dad still doesn’t know I smoke and my mom thinks these photos came from High Times. Apparently (because I don’t remember this) I even told my best friend Brittanie, “I wish I could just photograph weed all day.” TALK ABOUT MANIFESTATION.

Jump ahead a few more years. It’s March 2015. I’m going through a career transition and looking for work in LA, DC and NYC. On a whim I text Bri about working in weed. A few days later I receive a job offer. The first person I call is my anti-drug Dad, who strongly encourages me to take the position. I accept. Adios LA, I’m coming back to my roots.

By April I’d moved to Seattle and started at Western Cultured. I spent five months in the garden learning to clone, transplant, scrog, harvest, trim and package. Eventually I transitioned to sales and marketing, then solely focused on marketing.

Two months ago I received a full-time Content Mannager offer from Grassworks Media. I happily accepted, and brought Western Cultured on as a client.

Oh, so how did Cannabess come to fruition? I’d pondered the idea of a cannabis-only webite (hello, SEO) but couldn’t think of a name. I went on a Tinder date who asked if people call me Cannabess. Mind blown. They didn’t, but they’re about to.

Today I photograph top 502 producers and retailers including NWCS, Dawg Star, BelMar and Greenside Recreational. I love our clients, appreciate my co-workers and have the best time creating content.

I can’t wait to see what recreational cannabis has in store. I strive to create quality content which breaks the stoner stereotype and serve as a positive face for 502.

While my political activism is on the back burner, my passion for it still burns like a fat bowl. Who knows, maybe one day the marijuana industry will fund my campaign?

If you haven’t already, follow the adventures of Cannabess on Instagram at @imcannabess. Website is coming soon, so stay tuned.

Happy 420 readers. Thank you family and friends for your support as I grow in this budding industry. Have a great day and #LightUpTheMoment!

It’s crazy to think how times flies. Didn’t I just pack up my car to leave Los Angeles? It’s been one full year since I arrived in my homestate, so here’s a recap of the last 366 days. No joke.

I adopted a cat and named her Miss Kush.

I learned to clone, transplant, harvest, trim and package weed.

High Times reposted my photos four times.

I surfed more last summer than the last five years combined.

I hiked Lake Blanca, Lake Olalie, Rattle Snake Ledge and Mt. Pilchuck.

DOPE Magazine awarded me Photographer of the Year.

I shred Mt. Bachelor, Crystal Mountain and Snoqualmie Pass.

I changed my own brakes! Ok, with a little help from my dad…

I transitioned to Grassworks, a digital agency, and brought Western Cultured with me.

I joined a yoga studio, because it’s cheaper than therapy.

I went a year without sex.

I made a few trips to LA.

I trolled socialists who don’t understand economics.

I’ve used my photography to help transform the industry’s image of cannabis.

I let go of society’s expectation’s for life and loved mine even more.

I’m not sure what the next 365 days have in store, but I can’t wait to find out.

I woke up this morning feeling especially blessed. Last night I attended the 2015 DOPE Industry Awards where peers voted me the Photographer of the Year.

Unfortunately I missed my acceptance speech. I didn’t hear the show started, and stood in the back talking excise tax reform with fellow producers. Alas, here it is:

Congratulations to the three other talented nominees. Thank you Western Cultured for giving me so much creative freedom (and the best plants to photograph). Thank you Dad for buying me my first camera, telling me cannabis leads to latent psychosis, then encouraging me to take this job. Most of all, this award is for everyone in the industry who’s had their social media accounts deleted but refused to give up. We’ve laid down our roots and this whole nation is going to watch us grow!

Western Cultured’s grow also won Best Producer. Congratulations to our team for an exciting first year. I can’t wait to see what 2016 will yield!
