MADE to Volunteer

Thursday, April 30th, 2015

April is Volunteer Appreciation Month and as a volunteer of the Downtown Women’s Center, I’m excited to share my story.

Four years ago I attended the grand opening of MADE by DWC and it changed my life.

MADE by DWC is a social enterprise committed to ending the cycle of homelessness for the women of Los Angeles’ Skid Row Community.

MADE offers Set to Work and Set to Create training programs. Ladies hand-make items like soaps, candles and travel pouches to be sold in our cafe and boutique. One hundred percent of proceeds benefit the Downtown Women’s Center.

MADE enriched my life in ways I never thought possible. There really are no words to describe it. I’ve realized homelessness isn’t always a choice and we need to empower one another. Hearing these ladies’ stories and seeing their growth inspires me. Volunteer work brought about a deeper appreciation for life. Moreover, MADE taught me to do what you love, and use it to make a difference. We can all make a difference in this world, so if you’re thinking about volunteering don’t think, just do. Whether it’s homelessness, the environment, children or animals, get involved. I guarantee it will change your life. Thank you MADE for changing mine.

I’m proud to work for a 502.

I’m proud our budding industry generated $43 million in 2014.

I’m proud legal cannabis redirects police resources to issues that matter.

I’m proud the taxes we pay benefit public schools.

I’m proud our state is free to smoke a plant.

America has a ways to go, and the Washington law isn’t perfect, but I’m dang proud of the direction we’re headed.

Happy 420 folks!

I’m Coming Home

Four years ago, almost to the date, I set off on an excellent adventure. Los Angeles offered a part-time job and full-time opportunity. I took it, unsure where life would lead.

In that time I lived in Venice Beach, volunteered on Skid Row, conducted market research for Fortune 500 companies, started a political nonprofit, partied with *famous* people, experimented with fashion, met friends who became practically siblings, made priceless memories and emotionally grew more than I could ever fathom.

Los Angeles will always hold a place in my heart. So what brought me back?

I received an unexpected job offer and my gut told me to go for it, so I did. I’m working for a Tier 2 Recreational Marijuana Producer and Processor. I’ll be doing sales and social media, but until the operation is fully running, it’s all hands on deck. That’s right, I’m growing pot for a living. Did I mention the company is owned by one of my best girlfriends?

I love politics, and recreational pot is very political. Last year Washington State earned over $40 million in revenue from legalization. Revenue from weed goes towards schools, and that doesn’t include the millions taxpayers save by redirecting police resources to crimes that matter.

What about A Generation Empowered? Don’t worry, Fiscal Friday will resume next week (sorry, still getting settled) and I’ve already joined Seattle Libertarian MeetUps. Bottom line: my political POV isn’t going anywhere.

While I miss sunny SoCal, Seattle feels right. I’ve gone for several runs along Green Lake, and experience the same energy I did living in Venice. Well, minus the transients smoking crack in my driveway… Anyway, Seattle rocks. Clean air, tolerable traffic, no street sweeping and NO PARKING ENFORCEMENT. If I can handle Los Angeles (and China), I can handle anything.

I didn’t leave Los Angeles, I decided to expand my network. Thank you to all my Angelenos for the unforgettable adventures. My lakeside doors are always open. To my Seattleites, thanks for the birthday bash. I have a ton of leftover booze. Let’s kick it.

Pacific Northwest, I’m back and I’m coming for you.

I love sunglasses. Whether it’s wakeboarding the Pacific Northwest, lounging beachside in SoCal or catching a sunrise after a wild night out, they’re a style staple. So when I find an amazing brand, I can’t keep it to myself. Not to mention I’ve received a slew of compliments on these bad boys, so here ya’ll go.

Valley Eyewear is a fashionable Australian brand meant to withstand the test, and trends, of time. Lenses are made by the reputable Carl Zeiss. The line features a wide range of styles, from cat eye to mod, and so. many. color ways. Seriously, you Aussies are crushing the fashion game as of late.

Suggie wears A Dead Coffin Club in Dark Tort. Jane sports the DB in Black and Clear Stripe. I’m sporting my personal favorites, the Marrow in Matte Black here, here and here.

Thank you Nick for introducing me to this amazing brand. Thank you Suggie and Jane for being eyewear models. Peep Valley’s collection here and get ready to shop!

LAX to SEA iMix

LAX-to-SEA

Snapchatting from LA to SEA, I received several inquiries about my music selection. As promised, here’s a breakdown of my road tunes. I can’t take all the credit though, a lot of these came from my amazing yoga instructor Marielle (check her out Angelenos!).

The start is a little more uptempo but by the end slows down to more electronic beats. IMO it’s the perfect blend of pump-you-up and slow-your-mind.

I only cried three times on my drive, but probably listened to this playlist 13.

Enjoy.

1. Shine a Light (Flight Facilities Remix) – The C90’s

2. Put a Light On – Generationals

3. Breezeblocks – alt-J

4. Lifted Up (1985) – Passion Pit

5. You & Me (feat. Eliza Doolittle) [Flume Remix] – Disclosure

6. Victor – Prinze George

7. Cut Your Teeth (Kygo Remix) – Kyla La Grange

8. Good Times (Agoria Sunlune Mix) – Michael Mayer

9. Sonnentanz (feat. Will Heard) [Sun Don’t Shine] – Klangkarussell

10. Mess Is Mine – Vance Joy

11. Beggin For Thread – Banks

12. Too Insistent (Trentemøller Remix) – The Dø

13. I’m On Fire – Chromatics

14. Wildfire – SBTRKT

15. What I’ve Lost – Benoit & Sergio

16. Tell – Evens

17. Awake – Tycho

18. Light – Dr. Toast

19. Dolphin Kid – Baptiste Colleu & Pierre Colleu

20. Friend (Lover) – Evenings
