Photo of the Day: Day Two Hundred Forty Two

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

At first glance, this looks like another mundane snow photo, but it’s not. In fact, this photo is an epiphany.

I needed to snap a POTD. With limited light, time and a temperature in the low 20’s, I didn’t have a many options. My initial photo vision involved a dark snowy desert illuminated by flash. However, things never go as planned and they often turn out better than expected. Mel and I drove to the dunes and snapped a few photos before I turned off the flash and set up my tripod.

Holy Hades, it’s practically light outside! Aside from minor tweaks to coloring, I did nothing to adjust the brightness of this shot. It involved an eight second exposure. While that’s a long exposure, it’s not too long for fashion photos… You see where the epiphany comes in? This opens up a whole new realm of night, snow and fashion photos. Let’s do it ladies!

Runaway

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

As a dancer, I am obsessed with this video.

I hate Kanye West but I love his creativity. Prior to seeing this music video, I envisioned some sort of modern dance. Then again, that’s how I interpret a lot of songs: through dance.

If you’re a dancer, music fan, or creative soul, take a few minutes to watch this video. As for me, I’m doing an interpretive dance right meow.

Photo of the Day: Day Two Hundred Forty One

“It is nothing short of a miracle that modern methods of instruction have not yet entirely strangled the holy curiosity of inquiry.”
– Albert Einstein

Ok, so this crazy snow formation certainly isn’t a miracle, but science and nature are full of them. The snow from our deck trellis slowly melted, falling down and creating this unique snow arch. Go figure, after snapping this photo I shut the door and it fell…

What winter miracles have you seen? Any science buffs have an explanation for how this works?

Ten (More) Things I Hate About Facebook

Monday, November 29th, 2010

My blog Ten Things I Hate About Facebook received an overwhelmingly large response. After a little time, and a lot of consideration, I’ve decided to deactivate my account. Here are ten (more) things my friends and I hate about Facebook.

10. Quizzes

Tell me again why I care what Jersey Shore, Harry Potter or Sex and the City character you are?

9. Grammatical Errors

Their, there and they’re. Your and you’re. Its and it’s. Conjunction junction, what’s your function? Facebook’s function is to remind me how illiterate Americans are.

8. Pokes

Why is it always the guy I barely know who pokes me? No, I will not poke you, on or off Facebook.

7. Facebook for Business

While Facebook may seem like a great business tool, I find it annoying and frankly, unprofessional. I’m trying to establish myself as a business woman. Facebook is my personal life. I won’t want to intertwine the two.

6. Random Requests

The other day I received ten friend requests and only semi-knew one of the people. Creepy much?

5. Inbox Spam

I receive messages to parties and events I’m not attending. If I’m not attending an event, chances are I don’t want a message about it. Need I say more?

4. Not A Secure Site

Here comes the geek talk… Facebook is http, not https (http encrypted). With programs like Fire Sheep, any dork who reads code can hack your ‘ish and your internet identity.

3. Notifications

I like your status. I don’t like getting 1,387,289,465,289,502 notifications after everyone else does too.

2. Friend/Photo Suggestions

Thanks for the friend/photo suggestion Facebook. I really don’t want to creep my ex-boyfriend, ex-best friend or ex-friend-with-benefits.

1. Facebook + Work
It’s a bad combination. I’ve denied co-workers (nothing personal!) and it only leads to drama. I’m preventing future problems by deactivating my account.

By deactivating my Facebook account I cut myself off from 1,400+ friends. I’m not too worried though. True friends will get in touch with me via other networks. Heck, I’ve got iChat, Skype, Kik, LinkedIn, LookBook, Flickr, a cell phone and email. Just because I no longer use Facebook doesn’t mean you can’t contact me!

Puerto Vallartan Girl

Monday, November 29th, 2010

My mom snapped this photo in May 0f ’84 while vacationing in Puerto Vallarta.

The colors, composition and look on this girl’s face scream vintage National Geographic. It’s one more reminder to get traveling again…

Got film photos? Let’s see ’em! Ideas for film photos? Let’s hear ’em! I’ll be sorting through albums this week, so keep creepin’…
