I have done this and it is no cake walk. Not if you intend to make a good one. First you should read Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton and The Elements of Typographic Style (a classic read). They will give you enough knowledge to get you going. A way to start is by scanning in an alphabet that you hand wrote and tracing it with pen. Zoom in very close and outline the thickness of each stroke, it will help you later when you want to adjust the letters later. Goodluck!
A guy in my class is planning on making a font based on his handwriting for our senior exhibition project. He mentioned a specific program strictly for creating typefaces… I can’t remember it right now so I’ve asked him and I’ll get back to you!
