I meant to post these photos sooner, but this dang flu is knocking me out. All I’ve done is sleep, eat, sleep and sleep some more. I am exhausted! I hope to feel well enough to make it out tomorrow. Seriously, I am getting cabin fever after five days in my apartment. Despite being a hot zone, I made it out to snap a few pictures of the fireworks. Here are some photos I took from the Chinese New Year festivities on Saturday night.

If you’re thinking, “Man, those fireworks are close,” then you are right. I would’ve loved to not stand under my apartment entrance and take pictures, but with so many fireworks going off there was hot ash raining down on spectators. Not good for my Ride snowboard jacket! I think you guys get the idea though. These fireworks are in your face.

According to Chinese legends, the loud noises from firecrackers scare away bad spirits and bring good luck to the new year. I think it worked. The noise from the fireworks scared me too, and I expected them.

I know teenage boys (and men that act like teenage boys) are dangerous with fireworks, and that stresses me out. Seeing the Chinese light off fireworks takes my stress to a whole different level. No exaggeration, parents let children as young as two light off fireworks. I’m not talking sparklers either. Who holds the hand of a toddler while they shoot off Roman Candles!? I know from experience that dodging a backfiring mortar, Roman Candle, etc. is difficult. I am quick on my feet and still manage to get burned. I can’t imagine what would happen if a two year old child had a firework malfunction!

Luckily I have an entire week of Chinese New Year festivities ahead of me, so I’m sure to see more crazy fireworks. There are so many New Year events going on right now. It’s killing me to not be out blogging! Only two days of Tamiflu left. Thanks everyone for your comments. They are helping me feel better and fight off this crazy virus. Hopefully my next blog will be from somewhere besides my apartment!
